In an exciting new chapter, Spanish international football legend and World Cup champion, Juan Mata, has joined San Diego FC Ownership Group as a club partner.

This announcement marks the continuation of Juan’s long-standing relationship with the Right to Dream community, strengthening our shared commitment to using football for positive social impact.

“The biggest motivation to be part of this San Diego project is my relationship with Right to Dream,” Juan says.

From visiting Right to Dream academies in Egypt and Denmark to training with the team and engaging with young talents about using sports to drive societal change, Juan has experienced our model first-hand.

“I think Right to Dream is best practice in the industry of football. The way they approach the academies, the education of players not only on the pitch but also off it, and their character building. The way they're approaching the game is unique,” he shares.

The values of Right to Dream are deeply aligned with Mata’s own vision of what football can achieve.

“Juan has been an active and long-term supporter of Right to Dream, and he shares our values of using football to deliver long-term social impact and change,” says San Diego FC Chairman Sir Mohamed Mansour.

Extending To San Diego

San Diego FC, set to debut as MLS's 30th team in 2025, marks the next chapter in a shared dedication to community impact and excellence. With a foundation rooted in the same strong values and culture, the club reflects the principles Juan Mata sees as vital for achieving long-term success in football.

“The commitment of both this Club and Right to Dream to community impact, excellence, and a vision for long-term success aligns perfectly with my own values.”

He also recognizes the unique advantage of this global network. “The way the group is working with the different academies in San Diego, Ghana, Denmark, and Egypt is a real competitive advantage. I think it’s really important to have that in the club.”

The Common Goal Initiative

Juan’s commitment to making a difference is further reflected in his work with Common Goal, the initiative he founded to harness the power of football for social change.

Common Goal members—including Juan—donate 1% of their income to social causes.

With Common Goal also being a partner of Right to Dream, the alignment of purpose is undeniable.

A Vision Beyond the Game

Juan emphasizes that his focus isn’t just on what happens on the pitch.

“I am really focused on the success that’s off the pitch, the impact in the community, the feeling of belonging, and the positive impact that the club can and should have in the community."

This partnership is about creating lasting impact through collaboration with like-minded individuals who share a commitment to using football as a force for good.

As Juan eloquently puts it: “Football is much more than just a sport, it’s an educating sport for life.”

His passion, leadership, and commitment to social change make him an invaluable ally in our ongoing work to provide opportunities to young talents around the world.

We’re excited to continue shaping the future of football together.
