Located in Labadi, one of the poorest inner-city areas of Accra, the UCC’s vision is:
“to offer Ghanaian children from a background of extreme poverty the opportunity to fulfil their true potential”

The current provision that the UCC delivers include:

  • Providing a ‘home’ environment for 10 children that live permanently at the centre.
  • Providing basic numeracy and literary classes for 150 children.
  • Paying for 85 children to attend school.
  • Providing extra support classes for the 85 children attending school.
  • Running 4 football teams. (U12’s, U14’s, U17’s,mixed age girl’s team)
  • Running a choir.
  • Giving vocational and career support to school leavers.

History of Project:

The centre was established in La-Badi, one of the poorest inner city areas of Accra, by Mamud Billa in 1998. Billa noticed the increasing amount of street children and orphans in the community who weren’t attending school and were working or simply roaming the streets. Seeing this need he decided to start an education programme to help these children and enable them to obtain an education. However, when Billa established the project there were no financial grants or support available and therefore the teaching took place under a mango tree.

Since those early days the project has developed significantly:

The development has also enabled the project to start extra curricular activities to improve the children’s quality of life including football teams and a choir. These activities also provide an important attraction for children coming to the centre and through them we are able to emphasis the importance of education.

In August 2008 Right to Dream employed Steve Hirst, as Project Co-ordinator and Fundraiser, to work alongside Billa and enable the project to become more sustainable and to develop further.

Supporting the Project:

We hope to be able to sustain all of this life-changing work, as well as developing new initiatives- including a health care programme, offering
vaccinations to all children attending the centre against basic childhood diseases, a vocational centre for our graduates and providing payment for more children, who have attended our centre, to be able to attend school.

The desire these children have to obtain an education is extremely humbling and inspirational. They are so eager to learn, to go to school and to make a future for themselves. We aim to provide them with this opportunity and see them reach their potential in life!

If you would like to support the project then you can sponsor a child, which will enable that child to attend school and have all the support necessary for them to thrive. £10 a month can provide a child with food, shelter, education and pastoral care. The children who currently have sponsors take great pride in the fact they have a friend in the UK personally concerned with their development and future. You will have the opportunity to have regular e-mail contact with the child you sponsor.
Please advice Steve Hirst by email: steve.hirst@righttodream.com, if you would like to establish contact with one of the children attending the centre.

You can also make a one-off or monthly donation to cover the cost of the teaching resources and running costs.
